Stock Coloring

I started out with this lovely stock image of the London Eye from Morgue File. I resized and cropped it. Sharpen, if you wish.



Duplicate the base and set it to screen 50% opacity. This looks a bit washed out, but the next step will give some definition.



Duplicate the screen layer and set it to soft light 100%. Now it has more definition, but it may look too dark. Apply the high pass filter to the soft light layer at a radius of 10. (For those with GIMP, you have to download the high pass filter plugin. Once you download the plugin, the settings are redrobes with a radius of 10 and leave the "keep the original layer" box unchecked. You may have to reset the layer to soft light.)



Add a channel mixer layer, and input these settings: red output channel: red: 130, green: -15, blue: -15; green output channel: red: -15, green: 130, blue: -15; blue output channel: red: -15, green: -15, blue: 130.



Add a hue-saturation layer, and input these settings: master saturation: 30, red saturation: 45, yellow saturation: 45, green saturation: 45, magenta saturation: 45. This will bring out a lot of the individual colors.



Add a new layer of 000000 and set it to soft light 100% opacity. This will give the icon a finished quality and more definition. Voilà! Now you have a nice stock icon!
